WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Laboratory Technician will perform a variety of routine laboratory procedures, general laboratory maintenance duties, and enter pertinent information in the Lab Data System for the Texas Department of Agriculture's (TDA) Agriculture and Consumer Protection Division. You will contribute to the sample preparation and accurate analyses of pesticide products and residues in support of TDA's monitoring and compliance of pesticide laws. You will work under general supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Receive, inspect and maintain documentation in logbooks and/or worksheets for the daily delivery of test samples.

Chop or blend and weigh samples in preparation for extraction procedures.

Assist the extraction section team leader and chemists in performing extraction procedures and preparing samples for complex analyses, as necessary.

Prepare laboratory reagents for various extractions and analytical procedures.

Transport laboratory supplies/chemicals to and from the storage room; ensure adequate supplies are available to properly conduct extractions; notify appropriate staff when supplies need to be ordered.

Perform routine data entry and word processing.

Maintain laboratory equipment.

May assist in training other laboratory personnel when necessary.

Follow all TDA policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTSFOR THE POSITION

Graduation from a high school or the equivalent.

Work experience in a laboratory environment.

Work experience performing data entry.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures; of performing minor maintenance on laboratory equipment.

Skill in the operation of laboratory equipment; providing excellent customer service to both internal and external customers; and in operating a personal computer with applicable software.

Ability to communicate effectively and provide guidance to others to multi-task in a fast-paced environment; exercise sound judgment and discretion; and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

This position involves working in an indoor laboratory, operating various laboratory equipment. Exposure to chemical solutions where certain safety procedures must be able to be performed. May involve walking; standing and remaining stationary for long periods of time during extractions and methods development; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping and bending; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. May involve travel, (up to 5%*), occasionally overnight.
