Incumbents in this position safeguard lives and property at municipal swimming pools. Duties include checking and adjusting the chemical balance of pool water, enforcing sanitation rules, providing instructions in swimming safety, and coaching swim teams.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Watches over swimming pool.
  • Rescues swimmers who are in danger of drowning.
  • Conducts swimming lessons in accordance with American Red Cross methods and procedures.
  • Officiates at water contests and exhibitions and coaches swimming teams.
  • Assists in enforcing sanitation rules and regulations at municipal swimming pools, such as checking chlorine levels.
  • Prepares written incident and accident reports, and maintains registration at contests and exhibitions.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan. Requires the ability to assess swimming pool hazards and safety precautions.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as program participants, co-workers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations. Must be able to convey and enforce rules and regulations of pool.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to use equipment and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, facility rules, accident reports, incident reports, attendance records, registration lists and forms, and general operating manuals.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform and explain basic math including addition, subtraction, and ratios.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out written and oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature and noise extremes, potential violence, disease, pathogenic substances. Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift, push and pull up to one hundred fifty (150) pounds. Ability to perform lifesaving skills. Requires the ability to sit, stoop, kneel, climb and swim to demonstrate, coach or rescue.
  • Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with monitoring children's behavior and coaching/officiating athletics or recreational activities.

Qualifications

Applicants must be at least 15 years of age by April 30, 2024. Applicants 18 years of age or younger must have a parent or legal guardian complete and submit the Parental Consent Form.

Ability to continuously swim 300 yards demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.

Ability to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs while the hands are placed under the armpits.

Ability to complete a timed swimming exercise retrieving a 10 pound object within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Ability to perform the Breast Stroke and the Crawl Stroke.

Persons hired must successfully complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. This is FREE training given through the American Red Cross. Contact Ms. Dana Foster, Aquatics Supervisor at 314-541-6934 to schedule this training after filing application. This training is provided only if you plan to work for the City of St. Louis.

Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points

City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
