Job Description

  • Working in the medical emergency department on a behavioral health team, collaborating with medical providers.
  • Conduct individual assessment to assigned patients with any type of substance use disorder, substance use, or substance misuse.
  • Provide rationale for assessment for the appropriate level of care, and continuum of SUD treatment services; facilitate appropriate referral processes.
  • Implement clinical techniques to address secondary abuse issues.
  • Assess for signs and symptoms of intoxication, dependency, withdrawal.
  • Provide psychoeducation to patients about SUD and SUD treatment.
  • Provide psychoeducation and teaching to patients about harm reduction, overdose prevention, provision of Narcan and substance testing strips.
  • Conduct post discharge follow up for patients when indicated.
  • Rotating schedule; must be flexible with working evening, overnight, and/or weekend hours on a regular basis. Flexible compressed schedules are possible, such as working 4 day- week shifts.


Minimum Qualifications

Any individual working in a NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS)-Certified Treatment
Program or newly-hired into the System in the title of Addiction Counselor in a NYC Health + Hospitals health care
setting must have proof of completion of OASAS "Supporting Recovery with Medications for Addiction Treatment
(MAT)" training.
For Assignment to Level I
1. Valid Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) - Level 1 Certificate issued by the
NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS); or
2. Is otherwise considered a Qualified Health Professional (QHP) based on licensure, certification and/or
registration along with appropriate experience and/or training as defined in Section 800.3 (l) of the OASAS
