Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Support the WIC program goal of promoting breastfeeding as the primary source of infant feeding. Provide emotional support to breastfeeding mothers and their families with the goal of helping mothers to continue and extend duration of breastfeeding.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide encouragement and act as a resource to WIC pregnant breastfeeding participants who plan to breastfeed or are currently breastfeeding.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide emotional support to WIC participant breastfeeding their infant and significant other through personal interaction.
2. Provide WIC participant with advice on aspects of breastfeeding.
3. Provide anticipatory guidance to reduce the occurrence of problems.
4. Provide information on additional sources of help to the breastfeeding mother.
5. Be able to demonstrate or discuss the following: various positioning technique for mother and infant, manual expression of breast milk, safe and effective collection and storage of breast milk.
6. Assist in facilitated breastfeeding group discussion.
7. Keep accurate records of daily contacts with participants via log sheet and NYWIC.
8. Act as an advocate for breastfeeding in the community.
9. Attend in-service trainings and outreach activities.
10. Participate in peer support groups.

Minimum Qualifications

The ability to understand and carry out simple instructions. In some cases the ability to speak Spanish may be required. There are no formal education requirements for this position.

CERTIFICATION(S)/LICENSE(S):
Is a current of former WIC participant or is from the community served by the local agency.

EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:
Read and write 6th grade level or above
