Job Description

Purpose:

A Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a para-professional support person with a commitment to promote and support pregnant and breastfeeding women and their families. The peer counselor is supervised by the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator and/or the Peer Counselor Coordinator or designated dietitians.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Maintain strict confidentiality of all participant information
2. Acts as an advocate for breastfeeding in the community
3. Understand how the cultural attitudes and practices of their community impact on breastfeeding
4. Assists breastfeeding coordinator/dietitian in issuing breast pumps and recruiting for Peer Counselors
5. Provides information on additional sources of help to the breastfeeding mother
6. Participates in peer support group, and attends monthly meetings (Local, regional or State) when needed.
7. Use accepted communication skills & ability to follow-up with participants through regular phone contact
8. Answering telephones, referring or helping to schedule or re-schedule appointments, calling No-shows and all other duties as may be required for the pregnant women, breastfeeding/post-partum moms and their babies
9. Be able to demonstrate various positioning techniques for mothers and babies
10. Provide counseling & support throughout the pregnancy & during breastfeeding using counseling skills acquired during training
11. Assisting dietitians to facilitate breastfeeding group discussions
12. Maintain accurate records of all contacts and other forms of communication safe and secure.
13. Coverage of all WIC sites

Minimum Qualifications

The ability to understand and carry out simple instructions. In some cases the ability to speak Spanish may be required. There are no formal education requirements for this position.
