General description

The Comptroller's office is seeking Accounts Examiner III positions in the Account Maintenance Division; The Tobacco, Amusement and Ag/Timber Tax Section. These positions do not require experience in the duties described below. We will prepare you for the role by pairing you with experienced staff for on-the-job training.

Candidates should be detail-oriented, able to work independently and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced processing environment. The ideal candidate will have knowledge in calculating tax, penalty, interest and refund amounts along with computer proficiency and strong verbal and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to work in a team environment, be adaptable to changing workplace demands and communicate effectively with internal and external customers and agency staff at all levels.

The Account Maintenance Division of the Texas Comptroller's office works to accurately and efficiently process applications, reports, refunds, bonds and license renewals for taxpayer accounts.

The Tobacco, Amusement and Ag/Timber Tax Section: Processes tax applications for taxes and fees received from taxpayers. Provides permits for retailer entities who buy or sell cigarette and/or tobacco products in Texas and issues amusement machine and cigarette vending machine decals. Examines, edits and updates taxpayer accounts using information provided by taxpayers for changes to their account data. Processes renewals for coin operated amusement machine, cigarette, cigar and/or tobacco product retailer permit holders. Updates the cigarette tax inventory for stamps purchased and received from the vendor. Processes cigarette stamp orders received from taxpayers including the preparation and shipment of boxes of cigarette stamps that weigh more than 45 pounds apiece. Helps unload trucks filled with cigarette stamps in boxes weighing in excess of 45 pounds apiece.



Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a college or university with an associate's or bachelor's degree.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or business-related field
  • Experience in accounting, finance or business dealing with analytical/problem-solving issues
  • Experience in a Windows Environment and standard office software including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience with Secretary of State and Texas Workforce Commission inquiry
  • Experience in Tax processing systems including ITS, TPR and AWM
  • Experience with OnBase


Physical Requirement

The individual must be able to lift, pull, physically handle, and transport records, documents, boxes, and related information, weighing in excess of 45 pounds when required.

Substitutions

Education requirement may be substituted with up to four (4) years of relevant, office related experience.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct research on complex taxpayer accounts, analyzing for proper disposition and completing processing requirements.
  • Be responsible for processes electronic transmissions of tax reports and payment information.
  • Identify system problems, complete change requests.
  • Resolve reporting problems and file maintenance changes.
  • Respond to inquiries both verbally and in writing. Provide information to co-workers, management, other agency personnel and the public.
  • Be responsible for conducting quality assurance on work tasks.
  • Help unload trucks filled with cigarette stamps in boxes weighing in excess of 45 pounds apiece.
