Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for the protection of public health by regulating and inspecting food service establishments, public pools and spas and on-site septic system installations and modifications.
How does it get done?
- Safeguard public health by regulating and inspecting various establishments and installations.
- Oversee and inspect food service establishments, public pools, and spas to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
- Inspect on-site septic system installations and modifications to uphold public health and safety.
- Conduct thorough inspections and implementing necessary regulatory measures to maintain public health and safety standards.
Who are the customers?
- New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment
- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations
- Internal staff
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
- Working as a team member
- Conducting site inspections, environmental investigations and preparing detailed reports of investigation.
- Communication skills (verbal and written).
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and two (2) years of experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources Substitutions Apply. • If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of "semester hours" in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Work is performed in both an office setting and outdoors, with moderate travel to field locations, for meetings, trainings, and to permit and inspect facilities to enforce regulatory rules. The primary work schedule is Monday - Friday 8:00am -5:00pm. Might be needed for occasional weekend work.
