Under the general direction of the Security Monitoring and Intelligence Information Technology Manager I (IT Mgr I), the Information Technology Specialist II (IT Spec II) is a senior member of the Security Operations Center (SOC) working independently as a technical security expert. The IT Spec II will perform complex Tier 3/2/1 SOC duties as needed as part of the security detection, analysis, and response team to provide critical protection of the California Department of Technology (CDT) and State Information Technology (IT) assets. The IT Spec II will also utilize and assist in the development of state-of-the-art technologies and processes through which those protections are achieved. The IT Spec II will lead/participate in incident response activities as required as a member of the IT Security Incident Response Team.

The IT Spec II develops and maintains a working-level knowledge of relevant IT infrastructure and technologies under the protection of the SOC, of applicable State/Federal and industry regulations and best practices with respect to information security, of department and information security policies and procedures, and of vulnerability and threat management technologies, products, practices, and processes. In addition, the IT Spec II must develop and maintain working level and current knowledge of the IT threat landscape, risk management processes and technologies, multiple operating systems, network architecture and protocols, a full picture of IT security technologies, as well as interoperability and interdependency of all of those and more. Security best practices and complex technical and administrative requirements must be interpreted and applied in a complex technical environment.

Working Conditions

The IT Spec II works in an office environment and is required to operate a personal computer (word processor, spreadsheet, e-mail communication, presentation, and diagramming applications); use technical software for monitoring a variety of security-related items; and copy machine, fax machine, telephone system. Must pass a fingerprint background criminal record check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
