Why does the job exist?
This position exists to ensure the safety of employees at the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED). The role administers the State of New Mexico Safety Program for NMED by overseeing systems designed to identify and mitigate potential or actual safety issues. The goal is to protect the State of New Mexico's human, physical, and financial assets by implementing strategies that prevent safety issues from escalating, thereby reducing liability and loss for NMED.
How does it get done?
- Review work environments to identify potential health and safety hazards
- Design programs to prevent disease or injury
- Conduct inspections and ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) and other health and safety laws
- Provide direct training to all employees on safety protocols and emergency procedures
- Assist in accident investigations and implement follow-up actions to prevent future incidents
- Create and maintain facility mapping for emergency evacuation purposes and conduct regular reviews to ensure accuracy
- Update procedures, manuals, and policies to improve safety outcomes, develop and implement loss control initiatives
- Track safety violations and corrective actions

- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
- Facilitating large-scale, multidimensional safety programs
- Abiding by OSHA safe workplace regulations
- Performing property assessments, research, analysis, and data collection
- Possessing strong communications and training skills
- Being proficient in Microsoft programs, including Word, Excel, Microsoft Teams, and PowerPoint
- Working effectively in both virtual and in-person environments
- Training staff virtually or in person
Minimum Qualification
Associate's Degree in Occupational Health, Safety or a related field such as Industrial Safety, Engineering, Biology or Chemistry and two (2) years of experience in a risk management or a safety related field (e.g., loss control, safety and Worker's Compensation case management activities and / or workplace inspections) Substitutions Apply. Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course certification.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. This position also requires moderate travel to field locations, meetings, trainings, and inspections. The primary work schedule is Monday - Friday 8:00am -5:00pm. Occasional weekend work may be required.
