Job Description
Purpose:
Assume a leadership role as the Lead Psychologist for adult inpatient units while executing both clinical and administrative responsibilities. Engage actively in organization-wide and unit-specific committees and initiatives. Contribute to quality improvement and quality management processes. Collaborate with the Clinical Director of Inpatient Services to identify key areas of focus. Offer consultation services to other disciplines and provide direct assessments, evaluations, and treatment to patients. Work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to plan and deliver care across various treatment modalities. Oversee psychological testing within the unit and provide clinical supervision to psychology trainees and other staff members.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative and Clinical Leadership:
• Assume clinical and administrative leadership for unit-based staff and treatment team members, collaborating closely with nursing and LCAT/AT supervisors to ensure the implementation of evidence-based practices and effective milieu management.
• Engage in organization-wide and unit-specific committees and initiatives, in partnership with the Clinical Director of Inpatient Services, focusing on quality improvement and management.
• Facilitate or co-facilitate incident review meetings at the unit level.
• Address patient and family grievances in a timely manner.
• Spearhead new initiatives aimed at improving patient satisfaction and quality of care.
• Conduct multidisciplinary rounds and lead unit staff meetings.
• Develop, train staff in, monitor, and update individualized behavior plans.
• Partner with the Clinical Director of Inpatient Services to identify key areas of focus, which may include launching new initiatives, implementing outcome measures, aligning work output with regulatory standards, and optimizing financial compensation.
• Collaborate with unit leadership and the Clinical Director of Inpatient Services to formulate Statements of Work (SOW).
• Stay updated on, and ensure compliance with, all relevant regulatory and organizational policies.
• Remain current on research literature, applying best practices relevant to the unit and its patient population.
Clinical Responsibilities:
• Deliver direct care to adult psychiatric inpatients, focusing on those with significant behavioral challenges or those posing a threat to themselves, staff, or other patients, as directed by the Clinical Director of Inpatient Services.
• Complete all requisite documentation.
• Collaborate with unit psychiatrists to make informed treatment planning and admission/discharge decisions.
• Offer consultation to medical students, psychiatry residents, and other trainees in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, behavior management, treatment planning, and milieu management.
• Function as an active member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, offering consultation to other disciplines on individual patient diagnoses, prognoses, interventions, and dispositions.
• Oversee the psychological testing process for unit patients.
Educational and Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Facilitate and coordinate training opportunities for psychologists and psychology trainees, while assisting in extending opportunities to trainees from other disciplines.
• Provide clinical supervision to psychology externs, post-doctoral fellows, and other trainees.
• Participate in and contribute to research projects and program development, under the guidance of the Clinical Director of Inpatient Services.
• Engage actively in Psychology Department activities, including the development and revision of psychology training programs and policies, aiding in the recruitment of psychologists and trainees, delivering didactic training, and completing additional tasks as assigned by the Director of Psychology, in collaboration with the Clinical Director of Inpatient Services.
Minimum Qualifications
For Appointment to Assignment Level I:
1. Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, PsyD, EdD) in Psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited program, accepted by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
2. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Psychologist issued by the NYSED must be obtained within two (2) years of appointment to title.
For Appointment to Assignment to Level II:
1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Psychologist issued by the NYSED; or
2. Proof of passing licensing examination and proof that completed license application and all supporting documentation have been submitted to NYSED, which leads to licensure and registration, within six (6) months.
For Appointment to Assignment Level III:
1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Psychologist issued by the NYSED; and
2. Two (2) years of post-licensure experience, one (1) year of which must have been post-licensure supervisory experience; or three (3) years of post-licensure experience; and
3. Completion of the NYC Health + Hospitals Supervisory training within three (3) months of appointment.
