Job Summary

Under general direction of faculty, senior research personnel, and/or managers, responsible for operation of a specialized educational/social science research area within a recognized unit. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan. Consults with users to refine or adapt methodologies to fit specific research requirements, collaborates in development of new techniques and develops instruments. Trains users in techniques, explains and demonstrates instrument capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes. Develops coding systems. Records research procedures and inclusion of subject. Determines interview procedures and conducts interviews. Collects, screens and participates in data analysis. Conducts literature reviews and may contribute to or is sole author of articles and grant proposals. Has oversight for day-to-day operation of project. May supervise research support personnel and manage budget. Education and Experience: Bachelor degree in related field, Master preferred. 1-3 years-related experience required. May require supervisory and budget administration experience. Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position. Employees typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree. Under FLSA, this is the exempt job classification for this title. Incumbents in this position must meet the full criteria for exempt status: salary level, salary basis, and duties tests.

Who We Are

The Department of Learning Health Sciences in the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking an experienced, positive, highly motivated, and organized person to work with a growing research team for the Trust, Innovation, and Ethics Research for Responsible AI (TIERRA) program.

The mission of TIERRA is to empower evidence-based decision making around policies and practices that must exist in order to promote care and equity in health when AI is used. To achieve this, we aim to create easy-to-understand resources to support policy-makers, patients, and communities based on perspectives that are evidence-based and focus on promoting the public good.

The Research Area Specialist Associate will work under general direction from the principal investigator and other senior research personnel to efficiently carry out a range of tasks associated with quantitative and qualitative data collection, analysis, and reporting for academic publication as well as for the public and policymakers. The position would involve work on NIH and other sponsored projects as well as contributing to new grant applications.

Responsibilities*
  • Develop and design research recruitment and educational materials
  • Conduct literature review to inform research publications, manuscripts, policy, and other research briefs
  • Conduct qualitative data research activities under supervision including creating qualitative interview guides, conducting semi-structured interviews, facilitating focus groups, qualitative coding, and thematic analysis
  • Assist in developing and programming research surveys
  • Create reports and dissemination materials for lay public, academic, and policy audiences
  • Draft, proofread, and edit documents, including manuscripts sections, presentations, and grant progress reports
  • Prepare relevant documents and materials for research study compliance (e.g., IRB) and grant proposals
  • Attend regular meetings related to progress of projects and provide study updates.
  • Perform additional research duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's Degree in a field of social science (e.g. anthropology, psychology, sociology, social work, public health
  • Minimum 1 year of experience of human subjects research area, preferably on federally/foundation funded contracts and/or grants
  • Previous experience or training in qualitative research
  • Previous experience or training in qualitative interviewing and/or facilitation
  • Previous experience or training in social science data collection methods and survey research
  • Previous experience or training in the use of design software (i.e., Canva or Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Competency with Microsoft Suite and G Suite

Desired Qualifications*
  • Previous experience with community-engaged research
  • Experience and proficiency with data collection tools (i.e., Qualtrics or REDCap
  • Previous experience and proficiency using data analysis software for qualitative data (i.e., MaxQDA, NVivo, or Dedoose)
  • Experience and proficiency using reference management software (i.e., Endnote, Zotero, Mendeley)
  • Experience and proficiency in qualitative interviewing and facilitation
  • Experience and proficiency in creating infographics for policy, academic, and lay audiences
