Job Summary

The Martens Lab at the University of Michigan Medical School ( https://www.ericmartenslab.org/ ) is seeking a full-time Research Lab Specialist. The ideal candidate should have at least two years of experience as a full-time microbiologist after obtaining a Bachelor's or Master's degree, preferably with experience in cultivation of anaerobic bacteria. Additional experience and areas of expertise that are sought, but not essential for a successful applicant, include molecular biology experience (PCR, cloning, bacterial molecular genetics), and bioinformatics (RNA-seq, genome sequencing). The successful applicant would work as part of a dynamic research team to isolate, identify and characterize fiber and mucin-degrading human gut bacteria with the greater goal of building next generation probiotic consortia to introduce into humans and increase digestive health. The successful candidate will also assist existing staff with product ordering, lab maintenance and microbial culture collection organization as needed.

Responsibilities*
  • Design and setup research experiments, running experiments and gathering data.
  • Documentation and analysis of data.
  • Manage laboratory, including ordering supplies, ensuring compliance, and training staff.
  • Present research findings in lab meetings and individual discussions.
  • Responsible for writing certain components of progress reports and manuscripts.
  • May co-author publications and may co-present results with the PI in formal meetings.

Required Qualifications*
  • BA/BS or MS degrees.
  • At least two years of experience as a full-time microbiologist, preferably with experience in cultivation of anaerobic bacteria.

Desired Qualifications*

Background Screening
