Job Summary

Cognitive resilience is remarkable feature of the brain, allowing some individuals to maintain normal memory despite the presence of Alzheimer's disease pathology. The Kaczorowski Lab is seeking a Research Specialist Associate. The successful candidate(s) will work alongside existing lab members to design, perform, and interpret experiments focused on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease and Huntington disease. In addition, they will supervise and help train both undergraduate research assistants and junior technicians in the lab.

The Kaczorowski lab is in the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Responsibilities*

The successful candidate will be able to plan, develop, execute, and analyze an independent research project in the context of a supportive lab and institutional environment. In addition, they will supervise and help train undergraduate research assistants and junior technicians in the lab. We are looking for someone that has the aptitude to learn new techniques, works well with others, and possesses strong critical thinking skills.
  • Help maintain lab organization and record all information, daily, in an official laboratory notebook.
  • Assist with experiments that involve mouse handling and animal behavior assays.
  • Maintain organization of mouse colonies, including supervision of genotyping and genetic crosses.
  • Assist with tissue dissection.
  • Onboard and train users in lab protocols, equipment operation and standard techniques.
  • Participate in periodic research discussions.
  • Present data and plans for new experiments during laboratory meetings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and achieve short- and long-range plans.
  • Ensure functionality and maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Is organized, responsible, and reports results clearly and efficiently to supervisor.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related discipline
  • 2+ years of directly related experience in a Laboratory setting

Desired Qualifications*
  • Mouse handling and husbandry skills desired. Training is provided.
  • Demonstrated ability in development of research protocols.
  • Demonstrated success in coordinating and/or conducting multiple, concurrent projects.
  • Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct.
  • Computer skills for data documentation, analysis, and presentation (Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalents) are required.
  • Advanced mouse handling, husbandry skills and biomethods.
  • Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.

Modes of Work

Background Screening
