About the NICHE Lab

At the Nutrition Initiatives & Community Health Equity (NICHE) lab at UT Southwestern Medical Center, our work aims to identify strategies that promote food security and food equity in under-resourced communities by increasing access to nutrient-rich foods and making healthy choices easy and attainable for all families.

About the Project

In this study we are partnering with Crossroads Community Services, a free community food market, to evaluate three different Food is Medicine service models - usual food market services, medically tailored groceries, and medically tailored groceries + Crossroads F3 Financial Coaching program. This is a grant funded research project that will recruit 210 community members from the safety-net health system. This study will help us learn what patients think about Food is Medicine programs and how to best carry out these programs in the future. We will use what we learn in this study to create a larger and longer program that can

be provided throughout DFW. Our main goal is to build a sustainable and helpful program for patients that may not otherwise have access to healthy foods and eating habits that set the foundation for better health.
