About the Division

Join the Account Maintenance team as a Accounts Examiner! As a part of the Returnship Program, we are hiring for our Franchise Correspondence and Credits section. For this position, work involves:

Franchise Correspondence and Credits: Analyzes, determines and sets up franchise tax accounts by processing Texas Nexus questionnaires received from taxpayers and corporate data received from the Texas Secretary of State's Office. Determines if a corporation is in good standing and issues a certificate of account status. Examine, edit and update taxpayer accounts using information provided by taxpayers for changes to their account data. Identifies processing problems/errors and immediately notifies supervisor. Responds to questions from taxpayers, tax practitioners and agency personnel via telephone and in writing.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in accounting, finance or business dealing with analytical/problem-solving issues.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business.

Experience:

• Secretary of State and Texas Workforce Commission inquiry

• Tax processing systems including ITS, TPR and AWM

• Franchise tax statues and reporting requirements

• Franchise tax processing system

Substitutions

One (1) additional year of experience working in an accounting, finance or business dealing with analytical/problem solving issues may substitute for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education with a maximum of 120 semester hours (four years).

In this role you will have knowledge of:

  • Interprets related tax statutes, rules and regulations to determine liability and taxability.
  • Verifies validity of refund requests and initiates issuance of refunds .
  • Calculates tax, penalty, and interest and refund amounts.
  • Examines taxpayer accounts to determine appropriate and complete action(s) and ensures proper transactions are entered in the tax processing system(s) and properly documents actions.
  • Reviews tax reports for accuracy of computation, proper tax rate and correct payment information.
  • Reviews assignments, prioritizes workload and follows all section policies and procedures to ensure established turnaround times or deadlines are met.
  • Prepares documentation to justify actions and monitors accounts for completion and subsequent actions.
  • Provides information verbally and in writing when communicating with other division personnel, coworkers, management, and agency customers. Informs supervisor of status and progress of activities and workload inventories.
  • Informs supervisor of problems or errors and recommends appropriate actions for resolution. Identifies and informs appropriate personnel of work status, changes or problems that affect the section or others.
  • Makes recommendations for procedure changes and writes procedures.
  • Identifies system problems and conducts testing.
  • Learns and applies knowledge to progressively more critical and complex accounts.
  • Prepares documentation to justify actions and monitors accounts for completion of subsequent actions.
  • Participates in special projects/assignments as assigned.
  • Informs supervisor of problems or errors and recommends appropriate actions for resolution.
