Position Description:

This position includes technical and leadership responsibilities supporting Thermal and Fluids Design, Analysis, & Test in the Space Systems Department at Marshall Space Flight Center. This branch is responsible for thermal design, analysis, and test support related to major NASA programs and projects including the Space Launch System (SLS), Human Landing System (HLS), International Space Station (ISS), Microgravity & Life Sciences Gloveboxes, Materials Science Research Rack, and ISS Advanced Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS).

In a technical capacity, the selected individual will:

  • Supply inputs to key systems engineering products for milestones, provide technical insight for these reviews and events, and assist in technical evaluations of verification closure data and rationale.


  • Provide thermal engineering system requirement support for the analysis of spacecraft and space-based instruments.


  • Provide system functional design and integration support for space hardware interfaces, through the development of the integrated element architecture through appropriate controlling documents and deliverables.


  • Assist in the development of strategic plans and negotiate resolution of open requirements and thermal issues and concerns to ensure closure of TBDs, TBRs, etc.


The position may also entail performing reviews and oversight of complex aero-space craft, space-based instruments, and landing components, as well as, performing technical integration across NASA centers, diverse engineering and program organizations, and a variety of engineering disciplines.

ESSCA Team Leads serve as first line supervisors and oversee the Task Orders and personnel that support the requirements defined in the ESSCA Performance Work Statement. Team Leads ensure that high performing individuals are acquired through disciplined human resources processes and are appropriately trained and developed to perform according to Jacobs's policy and standards. This responsibly includes the proactive management of assigned Task Orders along with personnel to ensure effective accomplishment of MSFC requirements.

Team Leads:

  • Drive employee awareness and commitment to personal safety, mission success and client satisfaction.


  • Lead and supervise personnel in the technical accomplishment of task orders.


  • Manage subcontractors where applicable.


  • Ensure excellent customer relations and harmonious team dynamics and operations through excellent conflict resolution.


  • Facilitate excellent coordination/communication/collaboration with other Team Leads, JSEG management, CED management, Teammate Principals, ESSCA Technical Fellows, BFO and HR.


  • Support JSEG leadership communication, sharing, and development of best practices for MSFC and across ESSCA.


  • Actively work with JSEG and MSFC personnel to explore new work areas and develop new task scope as applicable.


  • Notify JSEG management and appropriate Teammate Principals of activities that could require disciplinary and/or safety actions.


  • Ensure quality of technical work in accordance with the JPMS, for which the team is responsible.


  • Strategically assign personnel to broaden and develop skills.


  • Leverage broad experience/familiarity to effectively apply the technologies and tools used in technical discipline.


  • Hire new employees, including requisitioning, recruiting, interviewing, selecting and on-boarding.


  • Monitor technical, cost and schedule progress and client satisfaction on TOs within the team.


  • Conduct special projects as assigned by Department Manager or Office of Program Manager.


Qualifications:

Degree in Mechanical engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 19 years of experience, Masters with at least 23 years of experience, or BS with at least 25 years of experience.
  • Experience in Thermal engineering and integration, interface definition, or interface requirement verification for complex systems is required.
  • An understanding of the thermal systems engineering life cycle ranging from requirements development, functional design, hardware integration, and requirements verification is desirable.
  • An understanding of space flight thermal systems hardware and ground system interactions is desirable.

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Experience developing and delivering technical briefings
  • Strong technical and interpersonal problem solving skills and team building skills
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook)
  • Basic skills using requirement management database tools such as DOORS Next Generation
  • Proficiency with thermal test set up and support
  • Experience in thermal desktop or equivalent
  • Experience in NX Team Center or equivalent
  • Knowledge of orbital thermal environment development
  • Familiarity with NASA standards and MSFC Specifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Technical leadership and engineering management in aerospace disciplines
  • Highly organized with demonstrated skills to simultaneously coordinate and manage multiple projects to full completion.

Physical Requirements
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
