Position Information

The Hondo Maintenance Office is located in Medina county just west of San Antonio. Our Maintenance personnel are responsible for maintaining over 800 lane miles, including the major corridors on US 90 and IH 35. We use practices such as base repair, maintainer level up, pothole repair, sign/delineation maintenance, and other operations to keep state roadways safe for the traveling public. Position Description

Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists in prioritizing and scheduling projects.
  • Coordinates programs and projects to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.
  • Coordinates with staff and area engineers regarding construction operations as they relate to contract administration, programming, planning, design, right-of-way and maintenance operations.
  • Implements proper traffic control procedures and safety precautions at construction sites to preclude traffic congestion and accidents; identifies utility locations and directs use of proper equipment.
  • Inspects construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, maintain and repair traffic control/data collection related equipment or facilities in accordance with plans, specifications and contract requirements.
  • Inspects current projects for proper use of personnel, equipment and materials, traffic control and quality of work completed.
  • Inspects roadways and evaluates road conditions.
  • Investigates and responds to public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, pavement markings, traffic management systems or other traffic related items.
  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Monitors the design and execution of state-funded rehabilitation and preventive maintenance projects.
  • Responds to complaints and identifies problems regarding traffic signal timing, congestion, operations and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
  • Trains and makes training-related recommendations to staff on new operations.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 4 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
