TxDOT's Fort Worth District is seeking a Construction Inspector III or IV in the Erath County Area Office to join us in the inspection and oversight of essential projects. Depending on skill level, this employee will perform all facets of bridge inspection, roadway inspection, environmental compliance, and materials inspection. Duties will include inspection of construction work performed by contractors, field testing and ensuring contractors are following plans and specifications.

Minimum/Maximum Monthly Salary

Construction Inspector III: (B20) $4,013.17 - $6,456.42

Construction Inspector IV: (B21) $4,273.16 - $6,908.41

Position Description

Construction Inspector III

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Trains others. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform material tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensures prompt notification and/or repair of any deterioration or damage that could be hazardous to the traveling public
  • Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining

    cause for material problems.
  • Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review

    activities for plan development by others.
  • Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and

    related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Construction Inspector IV

Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution. Oversees statewide oversight activities for construction projects; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution and provides statewide technical assistance and training in support of implementation, oversight and review of Site Manager activities. Trains others. May lead the work of professional and technical employees. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. May perform material tests/manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Work requires contact with [other governmental agencies and private entities] to include contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

  • Composes correspondence, reports and supporting documents; files; orders supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates programs and projects to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.
  • Ensures inspectors turn in monthly estimates in an accurate and timely manner to facilitate payments to contractors.
  • May serve as a lead worker or project leader.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Construction Inspector III Experience: 6 years in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Construction Inspector IV Experience: 7 YEARS in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Construction Inspector III and IV

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
