Why does the job exist?
This technical staff position is responsible for performance of professional engineering oversight and management assistance of remedial actions at Superfund sites.
How does it get done?
- Review grant agreements, facility plans, technical documents, engineering and construction contracts, and interim and final construction inspections and requests for change orders for publicly funded remedial construction projects
- Assist the Bureau, Program Manager, and Team Leaders with special projects, rule-making, outreach, grant development, and grant management
- Perform field inspections and investigations of environmental contamination for evaluation through the Hazard Ranking System (HRS) to determine Superfund eligibility
Who are the customers?
- New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment.
- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies to include contractors, and environmental not for profit organizations.
- Internal staff
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have the following experience:
- Considerable technical expertise in environmental assessment and remediation of hazardous waste contamination
- Evaluating groundwater hydrology, with pertinent or similar regulatory
- Project management skills capable of leading site investigation and cleanup
- Understanding Superfund sites and related work
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

No substitutions. Must possess required licensure, certification or registration and required number of years of experience
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. Must be certified by the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors (NMBLPEPS) as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily in an office setting, with extensive personal computer and telephone usage. Exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal. Occasional travel is required. Field work up to 30% of the time with exposure to seasonal weather conditions and potential exposure to hazardous and/or radioactive waste.
