Transportation Engineer I - B24 Salary Range $62,004.00 - $101,556.00

Transportation Engineer II - B25 Salary Range $66,259.00 - $108,666.00

Transportation Engineer III - B26 Salary Range $72,886 .00 - $123,267.00

Transportation Engineer IV - B27 Salary Range $80,174 .00 - $135,594.00

Position Description

Transportation Engineer I:

Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as project development and design, traffic operations. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Engineer II:

Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as project development and design, traffic operations. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Engineer III:

Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as project development and design, traffic operations.. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Transportation Engineer IV:

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as project development and design, traffic operations. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer I:

  • Coordinates on design schematics, assists with traffic and safety studies and reviews in-house and consultant developed traffic simulation, safety analyses and intersection/interchange projects.
  • Coordinates traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.
  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, and to provide technical support.
  • Performs and reviews conceptual design, capacity analyses, traffic simulations, and safety analyses associated with Interstate Access Justification
  • Reports, Design Exceptions, alternative analysis, and other processes in support of preliminary and final design.
  • Provides traffic engineering support for districts in project development.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transportation Engineer II:

All of the above and:

  • Assists with the updates to Division policies and guidance as it relates to traffic and safety analysis including updates to manual.
  • Assists with updates to Interstate projects guidance.
  • Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for transportation projects.


Transportation Engineer III:

All of the above from Transportation Engineer I, II and:

  • Assists with the training of engineering and district staff
  • Assist in developing technical presentations
  • Acts in an advisory capacity and answers technical questions regarding highway capacity analysis, traffic simulation and safety modeling and analysis and intersection/interchange analysis/evaluation to support project development.


Transportation Engineer IV:

All of the above from Transportation Engineer I, II, III and: :

  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Negotiates fees and budgets, develops and negotiates scopes of work, negotiates contract work schedules, monitors consultants' progress and work quality, checks invoices and associated documents, prepares supplemental agreements, monitors the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, as consultant project manager.


Minimum Qualifications:

Transportation Engineer I:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

  • 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.
  • Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications


Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*
  • Safety Impact Certificate


Transportation Engineer II:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

  • 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.
  • Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Professional Traffic Operation Engineer (PTOE)

Transportation Engineer I:

  • Traffic engineering terminology, principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
  • Applicable engineering applications and methods to support efficient planning and design activities, and project decision making, such as AASHTO Green book, Roadway Design Manual, Highway Safety Manual (HSM) Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), and other applicable engineering, traffic simulation and safety analysis programs.
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support project objectives and goals


Transportation Engineer II:

All of the above and:

  • Reviewing the work of others
  • Geometric design relationships to traffic operations
  • Guiding, educating, and training others to follow procedures necessary to complete complex tasks
  • Applicable laws, rules and regulations


Transportation Engineer III:

All of the above from Transportation Engineer I, II and:

  • Facilitating groups using effective communications methods; contributing to and guiding groups in defining objectives, staying on task and reaching consensus; soliciting participation, challenging ideas and summarizing accomplishments and planned actions.
  • Speaking to present images and ideas in a clear, concise, organized, and interesting manner to optimize audience understanding and keep the group focused
  • Some familiarity with FHWA Interstate project requirements


Transportation Engineer IV:

  • Coordinating and directing multiple projects
  • Establishing plans and setting objectives and goals that support overall business strategy/results; anticipating and adjusting for problems/roadblocks


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
