Please note that all charter schools in New Mexico are public schools. Public charter schools can be state-chartered or district-chartered. All state-chartered schools in New Mexico are authorized by the Public Education Commission (PEC) and serve as their own Local Educational Agency (LEA).

Several public school districts also serve as charter school authorizers and those locally-chartered public schools operate under the jurisdiction of the local school district.

Why does the job exist?

This position for the Public Education Department (PED) Options for Parents Division is required to administer processes regarding charter school technical assistance and training. This position will implement the responsibilities of the Charter Schools Act, including participating in the implementation and ongoing improvement of the division's charter technical assistance and training procedures, standards and policies for monitoring, evaluation, renewal, suspension and revocation. . This position will liaise closely with division team members including team members responsible for creating, implementing and delivering training for charter schools and authorizers in the areas of compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.

This position is responsible for using professional judgment to evaluate applications and ongoing performance related to academics established policies, statutes, regulations, and standards.

This position makes policy recommendations related to application processes and oversight and evaluation of academic performance, based on established statutes, regulations, and standards.

The most challenging aspects of this position include:
- responding the to demands of being routinely presented with novel situations that require a breadth of understanding of the uniqueness of charter schools in the overall context of public education;
- delivering honest, unbiased evaluation of charter schools when this evaluation is connected to high stakes outcomes for underperfoming charter school operators;
- operating in a constantly changing environment that requires a great degree of flexibility and ability to manage multiple obligations with demanding deadlines, and
- operating in an environment that requires the highest degree of coordination and consistency with colleagues to ensure consistent application of statutes, regulations, policies, and evaluation criteria.
The toughest problems facing this position include:
- extensive competing deadlines with a large volume of work.

How does it get done?

Support and coordinate training sessions and schedules for governing board members; register governing board members for training track board member training hours; assist with providing high quality technical assistance and training to charter leaders and governing board members. Update the Governing Board Tracker and TA team. Assist the Technical Assistance and Training Administrator with developing processes that impact Governing Board monitoring and tracking. Data entry, tracking all Charter School Changes and accurately reporting information to the PEC. Responsible for monitoring the charter schools email; support as directed with amendment requests and notifications in Amendment Tracker; follow up with schools to ensure all amendment documents are submitted and saved in correct locations in R Drive and Google; assist with compiling and preparing amendment and notification documents for the PEC. 40%
Maintain charter schools directory in the google drive. Assist in the development of meeting materials and assist in numbering meeting documents in alignment with the PEC agenda. assist with uploading documents to PEC Google Drive. Be the back-up to PEC Liaison for PEC work session notes.40%
Assist in the planning and preparation for the annual charter schools conference. Assist state authorized schools with the Epicenter data system. Research statutes, regulations, and policies related to charter school organizational, financial, business, and human resources management. 10%
Assist in data collection, site visit preparation and desktop monitoring of state charter schools, especially as it relates to governance performance. Serve as member on site visits. Prepare post-visit follow-up and reporting to ensure accuracy in performance framework indicator rating. Provide support, as needed/requested, across the Division at the request of CSD Managers. Assist with Notice of Intent and Renewal Training with The Technical Assistance Training Administrator. Maintain accurate record keeping and well organized PEC meeting materials in the R Drive and Google Drive. Provide note-taking at PEC meetings. 10%

Ideal Candidate

Bachelor's degree in any field. Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting data. Experience providing customer service and technical assistance. Highly organized.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration or Business Administration and two (2) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
