Student Success and Wellness Bureau (SSWB): Mission: Administers the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Program for 210 School Food Authorities (Districts, Charters, BIE's, Private and RCCI's) across the state of New Mexico.

Vision: The SSWB is committed to ensuring all school-aged children have equal access to healthy meals and receive the resources needed to be successful in their educational goals and objectives.

Why does the job exist?

The need for this position includes the significant work that will be associated with the passage of Senate Bill 4. Considerable work and oversight will be needed to implement this work successfully. This will create another wing in our bureau for working with with the Governor's Hunger Imitative under Senate Bill 4. The bill includes including NM Grown Produce funds which will be over $2 million dollars incorporated into kids meals for breakfast and lunch, the reduction of food waste and examining possibilities into how to reduce food waste, and determining standards for schools to incorporate scratch cooking into their meals. Over $50 million will be provided to schools to enable them to provide better quality meals and to be able to receive 100% reimbursement on a per meal basis. Three staff will need to be hired directly to Senate Bill 4 to assist with meal quality and menu analysis.

Over 215 school food authorities across the State will need technical assistance and will be taking part in this initiative. This position will report to the director of the bureau with two other staff that will assist with oversight of this program.

How does it get done?

Key responsibilities includes oversight of budgets associated with universal free meals and other federal budgets that are associated with the National School Lunch Program. Over $200 million is spent on meals for students in New Mexico and the state allocation is used for better quality meals for students.

Who are the customers?

The customers include school districts, including private schools, bureau of Indian education entities, residential child care institutions and non-profits that work closely with schools.

Ideal Candidate

Ideal candidate has experience in working with United States Department of Agriculture school nutrition programs, knowledge of federal and state programs oversight, working with different farmers across the State and experience in providing technical assistance to a wide variety of school entities.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years program administration or project management in areas related to the purpose of the position. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Work is usually performed in an office setting, with extensive exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), personal computer, tablet, printer, calculator, cellphone, copy machine, scanner, keyboard, and telephone usage. Occasional travel, working extra hours, working on weekends and holidays.
