The Academy is dedicated to meeting the needs of a complex and dynamic fire service by providing programs of the highest quality. The New Mexico Firefighters Training Academy's objectives and goals are:
(1) to provide training programs designed to develop the basic and advanced skills necessary for students to be more effective members of the fire service
(2) to provide the best instruction and training possible in all areas of the fire service
(3) to serve the public at large by providing education services, training, and counseling
(4) to provide a means allowing firefighters to demonstrate their ability to meet professional qualification standards.

Why does the job exist?

This position will provide the daily supervision of the New Mexico Firefighters Training Academy staff; determine course curriculum and accreditation; and ensure all courses meet the National Fire Protection Standards. This position will ensure that the New Mexico Firefighters Training Academy maintains its Internal Fire Service Congress Accreditation and Pro Board Accreditation.

How does it get done?

Training Program development/ over site:
-Ensures that all classes are scheduled, and tests meet ISFAC and Pro Board requirements
-Ensures that all courses are meeting NFPA/Pro Board standards, State and Federal laws.
-Ensures that all during instruction that students are safe and meet or exceed safety standards.
-Ensures that scheduled courses have the required material, instructors, ECT
-Develops training curriculum that adhere to current standards.
-In conjunction with the Bureau Chief, Develop and implement standard operating procedures.
-Maintains good working relations with the fire service.

Ideal Candidate

IFSAC or Pro Board Instructor II
IFSAC or Pro Board Instructor III
IFSAC or Pro Board Fire Officer I
IFSAC or Pro Board Incident Safety Officer
Prior Instructional Experience. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with associates, students, fire departments and the public. Good communication and listening skills. Handle confidential matters and materials in a trustworthy and professional manner. Knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, standards, guidelines and safety issues that apply to fire training. Plan and organize work while performing specialized or complex duties and resolving complex issues. Possess knowledge of applicable equipment, materials and methods used in fire training programs along with maintenance and repair of fire equipment and tools in this area of specialization.

Minimum Qualification

A Bachelor's Degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.

• If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of "semester hours" in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.

Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to background check and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with no limitations or restrictions. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in classroom and outdoor settings. Extensive travel is required. May be exposed to physical and mental stress, hazardous materials, controlled substances; may be required to work irregular hours, holidays, weekends and in inclement weather. May be exposed to loud noises and dangers inherent during the instruction of courses that instruct on Firefighting, with hazardous materials, Vehicle Extrication, and other Fire Service-related classes.
