This position operates in the Survey Section of the Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau (IBEB), Center for Health Protection (CHP), Public Health Division (PHD) of New Mexico Department of Health.
Why does the job exist?
This is an in-person position. The chosen candidate is expected to work up to 35-40 hours per week. The chosen candidate is expected to occasionally work on weekday evenings and weekends.
The successful application will manage and oversee the data collection for the New Mexico Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS),and participate in other management duties in the Survey Section, under the supervision of the Section Manager. The BRFSS is an ongoing nationwide behavioral risk assessment that collects state representative data on health status, chronic diseases, injury prevention, etc. among New Mexican residents. This position is critical to the successful operations of the BRFSS, including but not limited to ensuring compliance with all policies and protocols, supervising the data collection staff, daily troubleshooting, and managing data cleaning and submission.
How does it get done?
The successful applicant will:
- Directly supervise two positions and manage the data collection team
- Deliver new-hire training and routine training to staff
- Create and maintain operation protocols
- Assign and oversee the work of telephone surveyors.
- Provide and receive performance feedback. Conduct employee evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with all policies, protocols, and guidelines.
- Track data collection status with critical indicators.
- Identify challenges to data collection and provide solutions.
- Manage the questionnaire setup, data quality check, data cleaning, archiving, and submission.
- Conduct interview monitoring in the data collection team.
Who are the customers?
The data is used by organizations and individuals including but not limited to NMDOH, other state departments and agencies, local public health organizations and researchers, to better understand health behaviors and improve health services for all New Mexico residents.
Ideal Candidate
- Four years of experience in program management
- Two years of supervisory experience
- Two years of experience in customer service, phone calls, or computer-based data entry
- Ability to fluently converse in English and Spanish
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and two (2) years of experience in the procedures of business and management principles involved in strategic planning. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive phone and personal computer usage. Some travel may be required.
