Why does the job exist?

Overseen by the deputy director of the Environmental Protection Division, this position is responsible for the overall administration of the Radiation Control Bureau and its mission to protect workers, the public, and the environment from the potential hazard radiation can pose.

This position guides and directs diverse professional staff in the Radiation Control Bureau including the Radiation Protection Program; the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program; the Radiation and Chemical Advocacy Program; and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Emergency Preparedness Program.

This position also manages budgets and expenditures, federal and state grants, and staff recruitment and growth. Additionally, this position works closely with the director of the Environmental Protection Division and the Office of the Secretary on advancing strategic goals and initiatives so as to ensure lasting success across all programs.

How does it get done?

- Works closely with the Environmental Protection Division Director's Office to implement the agency's strategic plan by setting and achieving annual objectives for the bureau.
- Leads bureau managers by establishing team goals, workload priorities and ensure completion of bureau functions.
- Provides technical and regulatory direction to bureau.
- Creates pathways for staff growth, development and accountability.
- Assists bureau financial and human resources staff to achieve bureau objectives.
- Evaluates proposed legislation for impacts to bureau programs.

- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations

- Leadership, management, and systems change
- Regulatory and technical experience in radiation control matters
- Project management experience and ability to creatively solve problems

Minimum Qualification

Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Animal Science, Natural Science, Biological Science, Physical Science and/or chemistry and eight (8) years of work experience in environmental science, animal science, natural sciences, biological science, physical science and/or chemistry. Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. In-state travel up to 20% with optional out-of-state travel. Position requires extensive communication interacting with contractors, the regulated community, environmental non-profit organizations, and the general public.
